First-time waxing
First-time waxing in Oak Brook, IL
Your first wax at The Waxing Society is a private, judgment-free appointment where Lena explains each step before she begins. Here is how to prepare, what to expect and how to care for your skin afterward.
How to prepare for your first wax
Let your hair grow to about a quarter of an inch, keep your skin clean and unirritated, and plan for an unhurried appointment.
- 01.
Hair length
About a quarter of an inch, roughly a grain of rice, gives the wax enough to grip.
- 02.
Skin
Arrive with clean, dry skin and skip heavy lotions or oils that day. Gentle exfoliation the day before can help.
- 03.
What to wear
Loose, comfortable clothing is easiest, especially afterward when skin can feel tender.
- 04.
Tell Lena
Mention skin sensitivities, recent sun exposure or peels, and any skincare or medication such as retinoids. If you are unsure, ask your doctor first.
How long should hair be before waxing?
About a quarter of an inch is the common guide, roughly the length of a grain of rice.
Shorter hair can slip past the wax, which means a second pass and more discomfort. Much longer hair is best trimmed down first. If you are unsure whether yours is ready, ask when you book or email hello@thewaxingsociety.com.

Does waxing hurt?
Most people feel a quick sting as the wax is removed, and then it fades.
How strong it feels depends on the person and the area, and many people find it more comfortable once they settle into a regular schedule. Lena explains each step before she begins, so you always know what is coming next.
How often should you wax?
Many people wax every 4 to 6 weeks, in step with natural hair growth.
Your ideal schedule depends on how quickly your hair grows. Guests who return within 8 weeks of their last appointment qualify for Society Maintenance Pricing.
Aftercare after your first wax
For the first day or two, keep skin cool, clean and free of friction.
- 01.
Go gentle
Avoid tight clothing, hot tubs, saunas and heavy workouts for the first 24 to 48 hours, and do not scratch or rub the area.
- 02.
Protect from the sun
Freshly waxed skin burns more easily, so keep it out of strong sun and tanning beds for a couple of days.
- 03.
Exfoliate later
After the first few days, light exfoliation helps keep ingrown hairs at bay between visits.
- 04.
