Brow wax or brow tint? What each one is for

A brow wax removes hair and shapes your brows. A brow tint adds color to the hairs you already have. They are listed as separate services, and you can book them separately or together in one visit. Here is how to tell which one fits what you want, and what to ask before you book.

If you have been scrolling the booking page and wondering whether you need a brow wax, a brow tint, or both, you are not alone. The two sound similar because they both happen at your brows, but they do different jobs.

The Waxing Society’s online booking system lists “Eye Brows” (the wax) and “Brow Tint” as separate services, each with its own price and appointment length. This guide explains what each is for, so you can book the one that matches what you want, or book both together if you want a cleaner shape and more color in the same visit. For how to prepare for a brow wax, see our brow waxing page, which we will not repeat here.

The short version

  • Brow wax: removes hair and shapes your brows. Choose it when the shape has grown out, stray hairs are creeping in, or you want a cleaner outline.
  • Brow tint: adds color to the brow hairs that are already there. Choose it when you like your shape but want your brows to look deeper or more defined.
  • Neither one does the other’s job. A tint does not remove or reshape hair, and a wax does not change its color.
  • Want both? You can book a brow wax and a brow tint together, so you do not have to choose one or schedule two separate trips.

What a brow wax is for

Brow waxing is one of Lena’s two specialties. She shapes your brows to suit your face and the look you want, using high-quality wax in a calm, private suite, and she explains the process before she begins.

Come to a wax when the question is “what shape do I want, and which hairs should go?” If you are not sure about the shape, describe what you are hoping for when you book, or bring it up in the suite.

What a brow tint is for

A tint is about color, not shape. It darkens the hairs you already have, which can make light or fine brows look more defined. It cannot add hair where there is none, so it is worth setting your expectations around what is already growing in.

Brow tint is listed in our booking system as its own service. The listing shows a price and appointment length, but it does not describe the product or the process. That is why the next section matters.

How to choose

Start with the one thing you most want to change:

  • The shape feels off, or hairs have grown back in: book the brow wax.
  • You like the shape but your brows look faint: ask about a brow tint.
  • You want both a cleaner shape and more color: book the brow wax and the brow tint together. Add both services when you book, or email hello@thewaxingsociety.com first if you would like to talk through how Lena would approach your brows.

What to ask before you book a brow tint

Tinting is a color treatment near your eyes, so it deserves a few questions. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says no color additives are approved for dyeing eyebrows or eyelashes, and it reports that permanent eyebrow and eyelash tints and dyes have been linked to serious eye injuries. It also notes that some dye ingredients can cause allergic reactions, and that a reaction is possible even when you have been fine with a product before.

That does not tell you how any particular studio does its work, and we are not suggesting otherwise. It is a good reason to ask, and to expect clear answers. Questions worth bringing to Lena:

  • What product do you use, and can I see the ingredients?
  • Do you recommend a patch test first, and how far ahead of my appointment should I do it?
  • How long does a tint usually last on brows like mine?
  • Does a tint make sense for my skin and my brows, given anything I am sensitive to?
  • I would like both a wax and a tint. How should I book them together, and is there anything I should do first, such as a patch test?

If you have sensitive skin, allergies or medications to mention

Tell Lena about any skin sensitivities, allergies to dyes or cosmetics, or skin products and medications you use before she starts, since they can affect whether a service suits you. For medical questions, or if you have an eye infection or irritated skin around your eyes, speak with a qualified healthcare professional first. The FDA’s advice is to avoid eye-area cosmetics while the skin around the eye is inflamed, and to stop using one that irritates you. If a reaction does happen, contact a healthcare provider.

Booking the right appointment

Choose “Eye Brows” for a wax or “Brow Tint” for a tint in our online booking system, where you will see the current price, appointment length and the studio’s appointment policy. If you want both, you can book the two services together for one visit. Questions first? Email hello@thewaxingsociety.com and we will help you pick. Quick questions

Does a brow tint remove hair?
No. A tint adds color to the hairs you already have. Removing and shaping hair is what a brow wax is for.
Can a tint make my brows fuller?
A tint can make the hairs you have look darker and more defined, but it does not grow hair or fill in areas where none is growing.
Which should I book if I am not sure?
Book the one that matches your main goal: wax for shape, tint for color. If you want both, you can book them together in one visit. Email hello@thewaxingsociety.com if you would like help deciding.
Can I book a brow wax and a brow tint together?
Yes. You can book both services together rather than as separate appointments. Choose "Eye Brows" and "Brow Tint" in the online booking system, and the booking page shows the current price and appointment length.
Is brow tinting safe?
The FDA says no color additives are approved for dyeing eyebrows or eyelashes and has warned about eye injuries and allergic reactions from tints and dyes. Ask Lena what product is used and whether a patch test is advised, and speak with a healthcare professional about any personal skin or health concern.
